earthquakes. However, 7 of these have occurred in the last month,

Trump recognizes perils of settler enterprise
Trump administration officials were caught off guard this week when they
learned Israel was rolling out yet more plans for settlement
construction in the West Bank…Settlements as they currently exist “are
not an impediment” to a peace agreement with the Palestinians, White
House Press Secretary Sean Spicer added. But over the course of the day,
“may not be helpful” hardened into “are not helpful;” and “are not an
obstacle” softened into “shouldn’t be an obstacle.”
Afghanistan and Pakistan avalanches kill dozens
Heavy snow and avalanches have killed dozens of people in Afghanistan
and Pakistan. In Afghanistan nearly 100 have lost their lives in the
past three days – including 16 in overnight avalanches just north of the
capital Kabul. Thirteen people were killed in an avalanche in northern
Pakistan, nine of them in the town of Chitral.
US reverses travel ban over court ruling as Trump fumes
The US authorities have rolled back a controversial travel ban on people
from seven mainly Muslim countries after a judge suspended it. The
state department said it was reversing the cancellations of visas,
60,000 of which were revoked after President Donald Trump’s order. Judge
James Robart ruled there were legal grounds to challenge the ban.
China lashes out at remarks by U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis on the East China Sea islands
The U.S. is putting regional stability in East Asia at risk, a Chinese
spokesman said Saturday following remarks by President Trump’s Defense
secretary that a U.S. commitment to defend Japanese territory applies to
an island group that China claims. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman
Lu Kang on Saturday called on the U.S. to avoid discussion of the issue
and reasserted China’s claim of sovereignty over the tiny uninhabited
islands, known in Japanese as the Senkaku and Chinese as Diaoyu.
Appointment of US ambassador to Israel delayed over political concerns
David Friedman’s appointment as the US Ambassador to Israel has yet to
be confirmed reportedly due to Republican concerns regarding Friedman’s
rejection of the longstanding “two states for two peoples” solution and
his support of Jewish settlements. This delay comes on the heels of a
White House statement that new settlement construction could be an
impediment to peace.
