Tropical storm Otto kills nine in Costa Rica
At least nine people have been killed by tropical storm Otto in Costa Rica, officials say, as areas recorded over a month's worth of rain in a few hours. President Luis Guillermo Solis declared three days of mourning. Some 5,500 residents had to be evacuated. Several towns were covered by water and mud, and small bridges collapsed.  
S Korea sees largest protests against President Park Geun-hye
Hundreds of thousands have rallied in South Korea for what is thought to be the largest protests so far demanding President Park Geun-hye steps down. Ms Park is accused of allowing her friend, Choi Soon-sil, to manipulate power from behind the scenes. The president has apologised twice on national television, but has so far resisted calls to resign.

Tensions rise at CNN as the network aims for Trump
CNN is taking an increasingly negative approach toward its coverage of President-elect Trump, causing at least some tension within the network, inside sources told the Washington Examiner. Trump, according to a New York Post story, told the network he wasn't happy with their coverage during an off-the-record meeting at his headquarters in Trump Tower this week. Trump critiqued the news media at large during the meeting, but CNN was one of the top targets, according to the Post's report.  
Mexico's Popocatepetl Volcano spews ash miles into the air
Mexico's Popocatépetl volcano surprised observers with a startling sight Friday: a massive column of ash billowing in the air. An explosion sent steam, gas and ash 5 km (3.1 miles) above the volcano's crater, officials said. Luis Felipe Puente, Mexico's director of civil protection, shared photos and videos on social media of the plume spreading through the sky.

Earthquake of magnitude 5.4 hits Taiwan
A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan early on Friday, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no reports of damage or casualties. The quake hit at 5:55 am (local time) and was centred 81 kilometres east of the city of Hualian at a depth of 10 kilometres, USGS said.  
Magnitude 7.0 quake shakes Central America
Tremor hits off the coast of El Salvador, and was also felt in Nicaragua, which is being lashed by a hurricane. There were no immediate reports of any damage from Thursday's quake, which occurred around 120km off the coast of El Salvador at a depth of 33km, according to the US Geological Survey.  
Six killed, dozens wounded by blasts in Afghan city
At least six people were killed and 27 wounded on Friday in a series of explosions across the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad, a local government official said. Attahullah Khogyani, spokesman for the provincial governor of Nangarhar, said the blasts took place in different parts of the city.  
Otto weakens after hurricane, quake hit Central America
Otto was downgraded to a tropical storm but not before striking Central America at hurricane force, as an offshore earthquake also shook the region. The storm, packing sustained winds of up to 170 kilometers (110 miles) per hour at the time, triggered alarm in Nicaragua, El Salvador and Costa Rica but there were no immediate reports of any casualties.

Three Turkish soldiers have been killed and 10 others wounded in northern Syria in a Syrian government air strike, the Turkish military says. The attack occurred at about 03:30 (00:30 GMT) on Thursday, during an operation by Turkish-backed Syrian rebels against Islamic State militants. It would be the first time Turkish soldiers have been killed by Syrian government forces in the offensive.

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck on Wednesday near Japan’s Ogasawara Islands, 1,000km south of the capital Tokyo, RIA Novosti reports. The depth of the quake was 510km, meteorologists say. No damage was reported.

A federal judge on Tuesday blocked an Obama administration rule to extend mandatory overtime pay to more than 4 million salaried workers from taking effect... South Korea and Japan signed a military intelligence pact on Wednesday to share sensitive information on the threat posed by North Korea's missile and nuclear activities... The South Korean government went ahead with the deal despite opposition from some political parties and a large section of the public, who remain bitter over Japan's actions during its colonial rule of Korea from 1910 until the end of World War Two.  
New U.N. chief says politicians are failing 'losers of globalization'
The incoming head of the United Nations warned on Tuesday that "losers of globalization" in rich countries have felt ignored by establishment politicians, prompting them to turn to nationalist agendas... Facebook 'made China censorship tool'
