US President-elect Donald Trump has confirmed that he will most likely abandon the Obama administration policy on Syria to seek a possible rapprochement with Russia on the issue of Assad.

6.2 quake strikes off Japan
A 6.2 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of the Japanese island of Honshu, according to USGS data. TEPCO said the quake did not affect the integrity of its crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, located relatively close to its epicenter. The quake struck around 9:43pm GMT on Friday, some 65 km east-northeast of the city of Sendai.

A huge explosion at Bagram airbase in Afghanistan, the largest US military facility in the country, has killed at least four people. At least 14 others were wounded in the blast. The Taliban said one of their suicide bombers carried out the attack. The attack is being seen as a major security breach in one of the best protected places in Afghanistan.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved a three-year $12bn (€11bn) loan for Egypt to help the country out of its deep economic crisis. Egypt will receive $2.75bn immediately, with the rest subject to its economic performance and further reforms. IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said the bailout would "address longstanding challenges".

Thousands of public workers have stormed the Rio de Janeiro assembly in protest at austerity plans to deal with the Brazilian city's financial crisis. The measures, including cuts salaries, were announced last week. Many public workers have not been paid in months. The USGS initially stated it was a magnitude 5.3 earthquake but lowered that rating to 5.0.  
California secession group to hold meet-up at State Capitol
An organization hoping to facilitate the secession of California from the Union is holding a meet and greet on the Capitol steps in Sacramento next Wednesday, November 9, 2016, or, the day after the presidential election. The Yes California Independence Campaign, which is based in San Diego, is aiming to qualify a citizen's initiative in 2018 to get a referendum for secession on the ballot in 2019. One day after US intelligence sources warned that Al-Qaeda may be preparing for potential terrorist attacks in New York, Texas and Virginia, on Saturday the Islamic State called for the "slaughter" of U.S. voters on Election Day and demanded that Muslims not participate in the democratic process because "there is no difference between the Republican and Democratic parties in their “policies against Islam and Muslims."  
Secret Service rushes Donald Trump off stage at rally
Donald Trump was abruptly brought off the stage by Secret Service in the middle of a Saturday night rally when an unidentified man apparently tried to rush the stage. Multiple witnesses near the front of the stage told reporters that they believed that the man had a gun, but the claim could not be confirmed by Yahoo News. The Secret Service said no weapon was found.
