A magnitude 6.1 quake struck in the ocean 75 km (47 miles) south of the town of Rishiri on the Japanese island of Hokkaido early on Tuesday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It put the depth of the quake at 236 km, and originally reported the magnitude at 6.3.

A 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck on Monday, around 330 km (205 miles) north-northwest of Indonesia's Molucca islands, the US Geological Survey said. The USGS said the quake was 102 km deep. The NOOA Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that, based on available information, "a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected".
